Spring by Ed Sheeran can be found on his album Autumn Variations released September 29 2023 and was written to describe how COVID-19 affected his travel plans around the globe, yet still hopes that things will improve with spring's arrival. Featuring gentle guitar chords, piano accompaniment and strings; its lyrics convey honesty while providing hope – just what Ed needed when longing for freedom and adventure!
Some of the lyrics are:
I had a plan to cross the world But then the borders closed I haven't left this island Since I don't know when
But I'm holding out for spring We can't let winter win There's a light that's shining brighter At the end of everything
The song was produced by Aaron Dessner, who also collaborated with Sheeran on his previous album Subtract. Spring is one of the 14 tracks on Autumn Variations, which is inspired by Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations. Each track reflects a different person or situation in Sheeran's life or his friends' lives. Spring is based on Sheeran's own experience of living through the pandemic and waiting for better days to come.
